Gafanha da Nazaré

The region of Gafanhas began to be inhabited in the seventeenth century and in 1758 was already a settlement with "14 neighbors or fires and 140 people sacrament."

In the nineteenth century the settlement was increased, mainly due to influx from the counties of Vagos and Mira, as they were in need of land to cultivate. And it is curious how the people of Ílhavo and Aveiro were never interested in the use of these whitish sandy and barren.

At various times this region was occupied and reoccupied by people of different traditions and customs that are mingled in the uses and customs of the home that had settled here with the first urge to dominate stubborn dunes and barren.

Later, the works for construction of the port and the lighthouse, the shipyards and the dried cod, the salt and the planting of the forest Gafanha attracted other people, who came also from Minho and Beiras.

Belonging from the first hour to the village and parish of Vagos, on March 21, 1835 comes to depend religiously from Aveiro and in December 31, 1853 was detached civilly from Vagos.

On August 31, 1910, King Manuel II created the parish of Gafanha of Nazaré, the last to be created during the Portuguese monarchy.

On 29 October 1969 it became a village, briefly justified by the population growth, the port area Aveiro, the existence of the House of Fishermen, Medical Welfare, Sports Club, Movies & Market. On April 19, 2001 it is elevated to City.
